After several weeks of construction activity that has focused primarily on sitework and the building foundation, Sunnyvale residents are now seeing more evidence of the work on the addition to Sunnyvale Middle School. The steel framework has been erected, the floor deck is in place, with the roof structure to follow close behind. In the coming weeks, the exterior wall construction will begin and the form of the school’s new fifth grade classroom building will take shape.
The building itself represents the district’s commitment to 21st century educational ideals. Classrooms around the perimeter of the addition open onto a large, daylit collaboration space that will enable students to learn in a variety of settings. Glass garage doors open from each classroom onto the common area, allowing for easy movement of students between spaces and for flexible use of the classrooms.
In addition to the 12 classrooms and collaboration space, the wing includes a computer lab and STEM lab.
Renovations to the existing classroom wing will add a 4th science lab, improved facilities for special education, and collaboration spaces on each of the two existing classroom corridors.
An amphitheater will replace the concrete play court on the south end of the building, providing a venue for outdoor performance and instruction.
From this point forward, Sunnyvale students will begin to see rapid progress toward the completion of this exciting new addition to the Sunnyvale Middle school campus, yet another symbol of the commitment to education in this growing community.
