Using Technology For A More Effective Design Process

At WRA Architects, technology isn’t just a tool—it’s part of how we think, design, and solve problems.

A key part of that process is how we capture the world around us. Through photogrammetry, we use drone photography to record existing site conditions and translate them into detailed 3D models. These models not only serve as reference for reliable site data but also enhance our renderings, helping clients and communities visualize master plans with stunning realism. Whether it’s a future school or civic center, clients can see how a space fits into the environment before construction begins.

When working on projects with limited or outdated documentation, WRA uses reality capture technology. Equipped with advanced scanning tools like a point cloud mapping system, our team can walk a space and digitally record its architecture in full detail. That spatial data becomes the foundation for everything that follows—from code analysis to clash detection in BIM (Building Information Modeling). With advanced tools like point cloud mapping systems, we gather highly accurate spatial data—even in cases where little to no existing documentation is available. This ensures we’re working from the most dependable foundation possible, tailored to meet your specific needs. Technology such as BIM allows us to better understand complex structures, anticipate challenges early on, and streamline the construction process—saving both time and resources along the way.

Beyond modeling and planning, our technological approach plays a key role in advancing sustainability. Using energy modeling and simulation software, we analyze how a building will perform—before it’s ever built. From daylighting strategies to HVAC efficiency, we work to reduce environmental impact and lower long-term costs. This helps us meet today’s green building standards while designing with the future in mind.

At WRA, we believes sustainable design is good design. We employ a full-time in-house Sustainability Manger, and have a number of LEED Accredited Professionals on staff. We stay current and are experienced in several Sustainable Design scoring systems, including LEED, the Texas Collaborative for High Performing Schools (TX-CHPS), and the International Green Construction Code (IgCC).

By embracing technological advancements, WRA enhances the design process, improves client engagement, and delivers innovative, sustainable solutions that meet the evolving needs of our clients and communities.
