Major renovation of a 1955 urban middle school with new additions increasing the school from 120,000 SF to 160,000 SF, to serve 1,100 students, grades 6-8. The project includes a new 10,000 SF two-story front office and library addition that will establish both a new main entry and a new image for the school. The 19,000 SF two-story classroom addition and 18,000 SF fine arts addition houses all of the school's music programs.
The oldest portions of the building were completely reconstructed internally, and the entire campus was outfitted with new finishes and life safety systems. The design includes many features to accommodate the District’s 21st Century teaching model with collaboration spaces, maker spaces, STEAM labs, and a digitally based media center.
In addition, many aggressive sustainability features were included: new high-performance window systems, new continuous insulation in exterior walls, LED lighting with digital controls, and high-performance HVAC systems. The project opened Fall 2020.
